i had a very nice conversation with harry reid, senator reid the week before. we all understand this is difficult. scott, if it were easy to solve the big spending problem here in washington, somebody over the last 20 years would have figured it out. this is not easy to do. but the house has done its work and the president got re-elected. this is the time to lead. now, my reference to the president a couple of weeks ago was about the guts to take on his own party, to do what we all know in this town needs to be done. we've got to cut spending, we've got to change the structural spending problem that we have, and it's time to do it. i'm not going to be part of kicking the can down the road and imprisoning the future for my kids and yours. >> senator harry reid said yesterday he is used to pretty salty language. >>> australian billionaire clive palmer unveiled plans yesterday to build a replica of the "titanic." this is a harry reid-mitch mcconnell discussion right now. republicans have passed a bill to sequester bills. true an untruth. that was last year before the 113th congress. those bills are no longer legally liable. they are meaningless. they will have to pass meaningful bills. host: where was john hogan when g.w.b. was running all of that debt and deficit? caller: good morning. president obama wants to raise the taxes on the corporate jet owners and the oil company subsidies and things like that. of that will come back onto the middle class. we will have $5 or $6 a gallon gasoline. he cannot force people at the oil companies to take because he was then to take. if they do that to be sequestered, we will not have any cuts at all. he just wants to pass it on to us. it is similar to what happens in the space when they run into a fiscal problem. they always complain we will lose firemen and policemen and you will not have the streets plowed. that is the excuse they use. obama is using the excuse is that the poor will not have any money to cut thi

because harry reid decided not to do full-on filibuster reform, he still has to get through the senate and with 60 votes. and on the house side, obviously, the same thing applies. now that john boehner has broken the rule, that he's willing to move bills through with democrats as well as republicans, he still needs to hold together enough democrats so you don't see them walk away with some of these ideas. the main thing that the president has going for him is not so much the party unanimity. they are almost sort of left out in the cold because the establishment is pushing them back. they no longer have an interest in them. they want them to sit down and be kwooit because they're embarrassing them. >> five days before the state of the union address and the president seems to have done well pushing forward on his agenda. got passed the fiscal cliff. immigration front and center. gun control ledge slax and everyone some bipartisan group members of congress coming together on that. it looks as though he's been able to, in some ways, get them to soften on some of their hard position in term

reid, and mitch mcconnell. you would think maybe he could grab them on the side of the rosa parks statue right now and bring this up. they're all together. so it's the first time in years, though, this year that the president has a face-to-face meeting with republican leaders where they will directly discuss sequestration. i say again he's right there. this is a good moment. they're all applauding. why not talk about it now? we bring in today's political power panel. what do you think? why not talk about it now? can we put the shot back up? you know, they're all together now. why not talk about it? >> there we have it. this is a good moment. they are all together, all the people being called on the carpet to get us out of this sequestration mess. mark madness is happening. sequestration. we're going through it and no one has the brackets. let me start with you. as we look at the people involved in the meeting we've got boehner, pelosi, reid, mcconnell. we know last week the president reached out via phone call
